Over the past few years, in the field of infection control, due to the advent of prions, the infectious agents that have revolutionized the paradigms have transformed fundamentally. This has led to changes in washing, hygiene, disinfection and sterilization processes.
A prion is a type of misfolded proteins that can cause disease in humans and animals by triggering normally healthy proteins in the brain to fold abnormally. The prion mode of action is very different to bacteria and viruses as they are simply proteins, devoid of any genetic material. Once a misfolded prion enters a healthy person – potentially by eating infected food – it converts correctly-folded proteins into the disease-associated form. To date, nobody knows quite how this happens.
Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of rare progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals. They are distinguished by long incubation periods, characteristic spongiform changes associated with neuronal loss, and a failure to induce inflammatory response. The most common form of prion disease that affects humans is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)
In the recent years, this has caused prions to become the focus of study of multiple laboratories around the world and this has spread to the scientific field dedicated to infection control, especially in neurology and reprocessing of material and instruments dedicated to this health´s sector.
